Jidr vs Genymotion Desktop
Jidr is a free, open-source alternative to Genymotion Desktop for Apple Silicon Macs, with one-click rooted devices, a CLI and an MCP server for AI agents. Here's how they compare, including what Jidr doesn't do yet.
The short answer
Choose Jidr if
You're on an Apple Silicon Mac and want rooted devices (including Magisk), CLI or CI automation, or an AI agent driving the device, without a paid plan or an account.
Choose Genymotion if
You need Windows or Linux, cloud devices, commercial support, or one of the features Jidr hasn't built yet: operator and SIM identity, IMEI changes, disk I/O limits, gamepad or Device Link.

Questions
Is Jidr free?
Yes. Jidr is free and open source, with no paid tier and no account. The desktop app is GPL-3.0-only and everything else is Apache-2.0. Sponsorships fund the work.
Does Jidr run on Windows or Linux?
Not yet. Jidr runs on macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon. Genymotion Desktop also runs on Windows and Linux, so on those systems it's the option today.
Which Android images does Jidr use?
Google's official Android Emulator system images (API 29 to 36, arm64), downloaded on your Mac under the Android SDK License. Jidr runs them with the AOSP emulator and never modifies Android Studio's SDK.
Can Jidr root a device like Genymotion's root toggle?
Yes, two ways: Shell root (adb root) on images that allow it, and Full root, which patches Magisk into a per-device copy of the ramdisk and verifies it with su -c id. Both revert in one step.
Can I use Jidr in CI or from an AI agent?
Yes. Every action is a jidr CLI command with --json output and stable exit codes, and jidr mcp is an MCP server that lets Claude and other agents see and drive a device.
What does Genymotion do that Jidr doesn't?
Today: Windows and Linux support, operator and SIM identity, IMEI changes, disk I/O limits, network packet loss and bad-DNS profiles, gamepad passthrough, Device Link and file-based camera injection. Most of these are planned; the issue links in the table track them.
